The Department of Economics began to function since 1964. As the college started as a junior college, the department of Economics started with a pre-degree third group batch having Economics and History as subsidiary subjects. The Department of Economics emerged as a separate Degree Department in 1980. In upgrading the department, the services of the late principal Prof. C. N. Meenakshy is to be greatly remembered. Now the department is smoothly functioning under the leadership of Dr. Rajeev S.R. Since History and Political Science are taught as subsidiary subjects, the teachers of History and politics are functioning as a part of this department.
This course was started to fulfill the dreams of the veteran freedom fighter and social reformer Swadesabhimani T. K. Madhvan. As a fast developing social science, the study of Economics has a prominent role in the modern world. Economics is widely recognized as a significant window to the world. Looking back to the history of each and every country, it is obvious that the knowledge of economics has been instrumental in acquiring broader ideas of freedom and self-reliance. Now in this age of privatization, globalization and liberalization, awareness of Economics is a must for good citizens and also for good statesman.
