The Department of Physics was established in 1965 to offer Physics courses for Pre-Degree programme and this was followed by the starting of the Degree programme in Physics in the year 1984. In 2003, department upgraded to the status of Post Graduate department with the commencement of MSc Physics programme. The department functions on modern standards with excellent academic infrastructure and research facilities. The department functions with seven permanent faculty members, all of whom are PhD holders. Further, the department is enriched by our Principal, Dr. P.P. Sharmila, a renowned Physics scholar. Two of the faculty members, viz.,Dr. Arun S. Prasad, Head of the department and Dr. Tintu R., Assistant Professor, are research guides in the faculty of science in Physics in University of Kerala with research center currently at Sree Narayana College, Kollam. At present, total six research students are doing their research works under the above two supervisors in various topics for pursuing their PhD degree. In addition, we have two lab assistants at to help teachers and students in the practical lab.
The department is regularly conducting academic programmes such as seminars/webinars to facilitate opportunities to our students to interact with experts and peers in the subject area of physics, electronics and materials science. In addition, various observance programmes such as ozone day observation, energy conservation programmes in association with ANERT, Science day programme in association with APT, Power quiz in association with KSEB staff association are conducted. The department is a nodal center for APT talent search programme.
Our faculty members are also holding honorary positions in various academic bodies. Dr. Arun S. Prasad is the member of UG board of studies in physics at university of Kerala and the life member of Academy of Physics Teachers (APT), Kerala. Dr. Tintu R. is also life member of APT Kerala. All faculty members publish research papers in various international journals every year.

TKMM College, Nagiarkulangara is named after the great freedom fighter and social reformer Sri.T.K.Madhavan, one of the most acclaimed leaders of Vaikkam Sathyagraha.
